Virtual Presentation Information

Workshop 1: for Kindergarten to Grade 3

During a half hour presentation, I will introduce myself, my picture books and talk a little about St. John’s, Newfoundland.

  • Reading of Paint the Town Pink.
  • Discuss birds found in the students’ community.
  • Ask children to create drawings of local birdlife in unusual places like in their houses or at school.

In a half hour follow-up workshop :

  • Continue the discussion of birds; in particular migration and how some birds can be blown off course.
  • Ask children to come up with exotic birds they would like to see in their city ie. an ostrich running down the road or a penguin at the skating rink. Suggest they make more drawings of exotic birds in funny places.

Workshop 2: Kindergarten to Grade 3

During a half hour presentation, I will introduce myself, my picture books and talk a little about St. John’s, Newfoundland.

  • Reading of Mr. Beagle Goes to Rabbittown.
  • Discuss with children the importance of welcoming newcomers to their community.
  • How can we make others feel comfortable and included? Example: If the person comes from a warm climate, might they appreciate mittens for their first Canadian winter? Ask children to make drawings of themselves welcoming newcomers to their school or to their community.

In a half hour follow-up workshop,-

  • Discuss children’s artwork.
  • Answer any questions the children might have regarding making picture books.

Biography

Lori Doody was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1976. She majored in printmaking at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, in Corner Brook, and graduated in 1998. Since then she has worked at: a Japanese paper store, the artist-run centre St. Michael’s Printshop, and a commercial gallery. Her primary art practise has been in printmaking, especially etching, and in 2005 she was named Emerging Artist of the year by the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council.

She provided the illustration for  “Turk’s Gut Wolf,” Running the Goat’s second poemphlet. To date, she has published five children’s books with Running the Goat  — Capelin WeatherThe Puffin ProblemMallard, Mallard, MoosePaint the Town Pink; and Mr. Beagle Goes to Rabbittown.  All of them have been warmly and widely praised for their playful wit, bright and quirky illustrations, and gentle sense of kindness and community.

In 2021, Lori will have three new books: two published by Running the Goat, and one by Nimbus Publishing.

Lori currently lives in St. John’s with her husband and their two children.
