Virtual Workshop Information:
Option #1: BODIES ARE LIKE BOOKS!
Like books, all bodies have both an outside, or cover, that people can see (and even judge!) and an inside that’s full of stories about who we are and how we got to be that way. In this workshop educator and author Cory Silverberg will read selections from Sex Is a Funny Word that focus on bodies, identity, and boundaries. Cory will then facilitate short and accessible drawing and/or writing activities that encourage young people to think about aspects of themselves and their identities they are proud of and to reflect on how we all hold many varied identities and roles.
Can be adapted for Grades 2 – 12
Option #2: GENDER IS EVERYWHERE Whatever gender is, it’s always a mix of who we are and who everyone else thinks we are. Gender is something we explore, celebrate, and have trouble with for as long as we’re alive. That’s not a bad thing or a good thing. It just is. This workshop starts with a reading from You Know, Sex, the non-fiction comic for 10-14-year-olds that helps kids think about the way gender is shaped by the world around them. The reading will be followed by short writing activities that invite young people to explore the multiple meanings of gender around them. From TV and movies to social media to the clothes they wear everyday (and the ones they dream of wearing) we’ll talk about gender roles, expression and expectations. Note that for safety reasons the focus of this workshop is a collective activity of describing gender around us, not personal disclosures or exploring individual students gender identities.
Can be adapted for Grades 2 – 12
