Virtual Writing Workshop Information:

Note on audience sizes – In order to create a highly interactive space, we recommend no more than 2-3 classes per session (60-90 kids)

OPTION # 1 – The Spell-binding Shopping Trip: Creating magical settings

Good for students in K-7

In this workshop, Lee Edward Födi shows how his personal explorations of markets from around the world (Egypt, China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and Europe) have directly inspired settings in his fantasy worlds. He then leads students through an interactive brainstorming activity in which they imagine their own enchanted shops, selling a variety of fantastical items. After the workshop, students can take their raw brainstorming and create an advertisement for one specific shop that might be discovered on a magical street. They can also write a scene about a character who goes on a spell-binding shopping trip and encounters some magical mayhem during the visit. Worksheet will be provided.

OPTION # 2- So You Want to Go to Wizard School: Imagining a magical world

Good for students in grades 2-7.

In this workshop, Lee Edward Födi delivers a presentation about his visual approach to writing fantasy-adventure stories, then works with students in an interactive brainstorming session in which they imagine their own magical school. Students will design school names, school crests, a list of courses and teachers, and other creative aspects of an enchanted place of learning. After the workshop, students can take their raw brainstorming and create polished school crests and write “acceptance” letters to characters who are being asked to attend the imagined wizard schools. Worksheet will be provided.

OPTION # 3 – The Doorway to Adventure: The key to entering a new world

Good for students in grades K-8

In this workshop, Lee Edward Födi showcases his collection of doorways from around the world and explains how this collection has inspired the world-building in his own books, including Spell Sweeper and The Secret of Zoone. He then leads students in an interactive brainstorming session in which they design their own doors and consider important storytelling questions. Students will then use this brainstorming as a pathway to writing a story or a scene. Worksheet will be provided.
