Virtual Workshop Information:

OPTION #1: Let’s Make Dioramas! (Hands-on Art Workshop)

Duration: 60 min

Targeted Age-Group: Grades 2 to 6, approximately 25 students

Workshop Description:

This virtual workshop will focus on creating dioramas with materials that can be found at home or outside in nature. Starting with the introduction to diorama art, we will learn what a diorama is and how it’s made. Each grade will focus on a different habitat (e.g. aquatic, desert, forest, grassland, tundra). Students will be asked to create nature elements for background, middleground and foreground (e.g. water, planes) with a minimum of three living creatures (e.g. animals, insects, plants). We will explore the elements and principles of art as we draw, colour and cut. Learn how to assemble the pieces with tips and tricks on how we can place them in or outside dioramas.

Materials:

  • cardboard box for each student (e.g. cereal box, cracker box)
  • paper for drawing
  • drawing tools (pencil, eraser, pen, sharpie)
  • colouring tools (crayons, pencil crayons, or markers)
  • scissors
  • glue stick and tape
  • paper clips (can be used as a stand for cut-out pieces)
  • string, yarn, thread (any type!)
  • coloured papers
  • recycled magazines, flyers, newspapers
  • found materials (e.g. dried flowers, leaves, little pebbles)

OPTION # 2:  Natural Landscape in 3D Collage (Hands-on Art Workshop)

Duration: 60 min

Targeted Age-Group: Grades 7 to 12, approximately 25 students

Workshop Description:

This virtual workshop will focus on creating natural landscapes in 3D collage art. Each student will focus on a landscape of their choice (e.g. mountain, waterfall, beach). Students will be asked to re-create a background, middleground and foreground of their sceneries as a separate layer. We will explore watercolour painting techniques (e.g. wet-on-wet, layered painting, dry painting, painting with salt) to create different textures of various landforms. We will review the elements and principles of art as we draw, paint and cut. Learn how to assemble each layer using cardboard pieces to create a 3D collaged natural landscape.

Materials:

  • cardboard box
  • paper
  • drawing tools (pencil, eraser, pen, sharpie)
  • colouring tools (pencil crayons, or markers)
  • watercolour paint and brush
  • salt
  • scissors
  • glue stick and tape
