STANDARD PRESENTATION

SUMMARY: A lively, interactive co-presentation by the creators of The Good Fight, a graphic novel based on the infamous anti-Semitic Riot at Christie Pits in 1933 Toronto. Josh and Ted’s book is an adventure story that exposes the historic roots of prejudices still lurking in Canada today. They also share writing and drawing tips – and instructions on how to pick pockets!

GRAPHIC NOVEL WORKSHOP

SUMMARY: A fast paced, fun, and highly interactive workshop on creating a graphic novel episode based on The Good Fight. Ted and Josh lead students through group drawing, brainstorming, and planning exercises that help them create a basic storyline and begin to tell it on an eight-panel comics storyboard that they can complete later.

Biography

Ted Staunton is the author of over 40 books for young people of all ages. His is a winner of the CCBC John Spray Mystery Award and has numerous nominations for tree awards across Canada for various books. An experienced presenter to all age/grade groups in many different settings, Ted brings a mixture of humor, music, and audience participation to his presentations. His most recent book is The Good Fight, (Scholastic, 2021) a graphic novel based on the infamous real-life Riot at Christie Pits in 1933, a key moment in Canada’s evolving attitudes to immigrants, inclusiveness and the corrosive power of discrimination.

Josh Rosen (he/him) is a Toronto-based cartoonist and illustrator. A graduate of the Center for Cartoon Studies, Josh has done illustration work for magazines, animation projects, documentary films and tabletop roleplaying games, as well as a slew of small-press comics work. His first graphic novel, The Good Fight (Scholastic Canada 2021, with author Ted Staunton), was long-listed for the City of Toronto Book Award. His next graphic novel, History Comics: WWII Fight on the Homefront (First Second Books, with author Kate Hannigan) is set to release in fall of 2023. He enjoys making comics about spooky stuff, nerdy stuff, and real-world history. When not actively drawing, Josh works in children’s arts and literacy education.
