15 min before official start time: Tech test. This will also be a chance for Debbie and the educator(s) to go over the schedule, content, and confirm info.

Presentation schedule:

5 min:

Host introduces me (my last name rhymes with “Zoë”) and I do a cover-to-cover reading of one of my picture books.

5-10 min:

I talk about how a picture book is written and illustrated, showing examples and also offering tips throughout that are geared specifically toward young writers and illustrators. My biggest tip is always: READ A LOT! For younger students, I tend to make this section shorter and the activity portion longer.

10-15 min:

Art/storytelling activity. Depending on the age of the students, I will be doing a drawing demo to show how I create characters and emotions, show how to use found object art to brainstorm character and story ideas.

I usually like to involve some call-and-response to make this more interactive, but this will depend heavily on how many are in the group and the venue settings. Please have the following materials handy:

– Paper to draw on (a few sheets).

– Something to draw with (pencil, pen, or crayons).

– 1-2 whole pages ripped from old magazine, flyer or newspaper. I will be having the students tear these into interesting shapes and using them for found object art/writing activities.

– Glue stick or tape.

5 min:

Q&A. Please make sure I can clearly hear each question. For larger groups, I recommend having an educator near the computer microphone tell me the questions.
