melanie-florence-promoHow did you get started in children’s books?

I always wanted to write for children, although I never really narrowed it down to an age group. I liked the idea of writing thrillers, so I thought I’d write for teens but I ended up kind of running the gamut and writing picture books, middle grade AND teens. It wasn’t until I wrote my first two books (which were non-fiction) that I finally got to work on a novel, which was really where my passion was.

What (or who) inspires your writing or art?

My kids! They’ve given me some great ideas over the years. I tend to bounce ideas off them. And really…they’re my reason for wanting to follow my dream of being a writer. When I write, I always hope they’ll think that what their mom does is important and interesting and that they’re proud of me.

What was your favourite book as a child? Why?

Hmmm. That’s a tough one. I loved Anne of Green Gables. But really any book that I could be completely lost in while I was reading it. I read voraciously as a child and I have so many favourites!

How can teachers use your books in the classroom?

I think that’s actually a question to ask them! How do YOU think you can use them? Maybe to introduce Indigenous issues? Hopefully to entertain?

What are you looking forward to most during TD Canadian Children’s Book Week?

I think I’m most looking forward to meeting new people and travelling to places I wouldn’t normally get to share my love of books and of writing with. I hope my audiences are as enthusiastic as I am!
